Hello and welcome to another Geek Of The Week. Today is the day for the Gimp version of the Line Art tutorial. If you downloaded the Photoshop version of this tutorial you will notice that there are a few more steps involved. The big difference is that you don’t have the single click option of Photomerging your multiple scans into one. Instead you have to merge the photos manually.

I also have found a nice free vector art program that I will try and achieve what I did in adobe illustrator. I will try and take our cleaned up line art and make it vector. So enjoy this release of the gimp tutorial. Look for the updated vector tutorials sometime soon for both Adobe illustrator and Inkscape.

Gimp Line Art PDF Only

Gimp Line Art Bundle. This includes the original scanned image, the final gimp file, and the multiple scanned images. This way you can follow along with the tutorial.

I encourage you to check out the site for Gimp HERE. If you want the files then you can go here.

Mac people Click Here and choose your version.

Windows users click here. This is a download link.

Until next week. I’m Street Fece and I’m OUT!!!

Hello again peoples and welcome to another Geek of the week. If you are here for the Gimp Line Art Tutorial well that will be here next week.

Heroes in History is what were talking about today. I thought it has been a while since I found a cool artist to talk about and just as I thought about it I find this guy. I know the internets are magic!

This guy were talking about is named Agan Harahap. Whats so cool about his recent art is that he has taken superheros and put them into old historic photos. I could not find much info about this guy so I cannot give you any back story about him or the pictures. He does however have Deviant art page and a Flickr stream. So until more info is found on this guy we can at least enjoy his art. Click the one you want. Deviant art Profile or Flickr Stream

I think these photos are pretty cool. I hope you liked them as much as I did. I kind of want to do one of my own now. Well that’s it for this weeks Geek. We can scan your drawing in multiple pieces and then stitch them together to make them whole again.

Photoshop has an automated feature that will do this for you automatically. We don’t have Photoshop so we must do it manually. Oh well it jus give you more practice.

Well hello again. It has been a while. I guess I should tell you what happened. Remember way back when I posted last. Well in that post I had a measuring chart. If you missed it then go check it now. Well I guess nobody told Mr. Wolf that this was going on the internets. When he started getting jokes about having baby parts well he wasn’t too happy. I should have known that this was going to happen but I care about you guys more and my blog needed the pic. So my doorbell rings. I usually don’t answer the door but I know is girl scout cookie time and I’m all out of thin mints. I’m getting all giddy getting my money and race to the door and open it without any hesitation. Ahem Mr. Wolf wha…POW!!! Thats all I got out of my mouth before he was attacking me. He beat me around the hands face mercifully. I could tell he had done this before. I’m just glad I hadn’t showered in a week and so I was good and stinky. That was my only way I could fight back. I just let him get all stinky. I actually think he got the worst of it but I was unable to type until now. I did what I could but I was no match for the wolf rage.

Moving on.

Tutorial time. Well it is finally time to release this thing. I was going to have one big release with all the tutorials but writing just one tutorial proved to be more difficult than I had expected.

So this tutorial is for the Kids I met at last years comic con. I was handing out the really cool Mythoi posters that Jed whipped up and I got asked how we get the art into the computer. These are things I guess I just took for granted that most people knew. I did my best to explain the different processes but I could tell that it was just too much without any visual aids. This tutorial is what I came up with out of that encounter. I do my best to give you a quick way to get some pretty decent line art that is ready for prime time comic production. I encourage anyone to take a look and give it a read.

Below you will find two downloadable files. One is just the PDF and the other is a bundle. The bundle has the PDF and all the artwork I used to create the tutorial so that you can follow along.

I hope you like it and give me some feedback. I will be updating this thing and I can implement some of your suggestions.

Here is the PDF right click to save as

Here is the Complete Bundle

Well I guess thats it for this weeks Geek. I hope you like it. Next week I will be posting the Gimp version of this tutorial. Why gimp well because its similar to Photoshop but its fee. I’m Street Fece and I’m OUT!!!

So first off I wanted to say sorry no post last week. I am putting together a nice tutorial for all you aspiring comic artists. I decided that I should spend a little more time on it to make it better. So in the meantime lets just get on with another Geek Of The Week.

So starting off if you write blogs I recommend you save often and write your blog in something like Microsoft word that is offline so you won’t experience the web hickup I just encountered where my entire post was deleted as I went to publish. All I can tell you now is that the messed up post was probably the best post you were ever going to read. Now you will just have to settle for this crap.

I’m using this thing right now. Crying myself a river from a lost post.

Crappy inventors make crappy inventions. Crappy inventors remind me of people that go around and try to act funny when they really are not at all. Actually crazy inventors are a lot worse sometimes because while a joke can suck but if an invention sucks it could kill you. I will now attempt to recapture what was lost.

1. Phone Fingers

WTF? Yes invented for people that love their touch screen devices but not enough to buy an actual on device cover. Instead you buy these so your hard hands don’t scratch or oily fingers don’t smudge. I really don’t know what is the difference between these and Finger Cots. I prefer to just use a condom and stretch it over my entire hand for proper screen protection. If I’m really in a jam then a popped balloon will work. They even have a sizing chart to help you pick the right size. As soon as I found this out I quickly printed it out and passed it around. Below are our results.

Here is their FAQ

Which size do I need?
You can download and print our size chart to see which size fits best. ( lets see if your as big as Semantink )

How do I put them on?
Gently uproll them on your finger without pressure.

Can I use them more than one time?
Phone Fingers are made of very thin durable latex material. By using them gently they would last for a very long time with multiple usage. ( Your lucky it didn’t break the first time and you want to use it again? )

Do Phone Fingers really work?
Of course they do! A touch screen won’t recognize any difference between bare fingers or wearing Phone Fingers. ( Are you sure my phone wont be able to tell if I’m wearing one. It doesn’t feel the same. )

2. Doggy Side Sack

I don’t know what this thing is called so we will just call it the Doggy Side Sack. Seriously there is a major gap between what was acceptable back in the day from today. I’m sure if you rigged your car up with this thing today someone would call the cops on you. Then you would probably be tasered. The Doggy Side Sack was first debuted in Popular Mechanics in 1963.

2. Anti Eating Face Mask

Yup the Anti Eating Face Mask. I think this is related to the Face shackle made of Bumcivillian’s cousin, Iron. This is an actual patent. A lady is the inventor of this device and her name is being withheld. I don’t how this thing is supposed to keep you from eating. I mean you can just take it off. Why not just wear a bag over your head or a motorcycle helmet. I’m sure either one of these would attain the same results. I think this thing looks like a S&M Device myself.

3. Shoe Fitting Device

Hmm Shoe Fitting Device sounds like a good idea. I think so to. You may have even used a shoe fitting device before as well. That being said you never used one of these. This one used X-rays to see through the shoe in order to tell if you were getting a good fit. Pretty cool just stick your foot in that hole turn it on and wallah the shoe fits and your sex organs don’t work anymore. Yes they didn’t know about the harmful effects of repeated use X-rays on the human body. I’m sure it was pretty cool though to see your bones.

4. Smile Monitor

Only in Japan would you find something like this. A railway company is now subjecting their employees to this smile detector machine. Before their employees can work the must first have their smiles analyzed. The program will rate their smile and when they have achieved a 100% a photo is taken, printed out, and handed to the employee to carry around so they can be reminded how to smile with a 100%.

5. Fire Box Prank Detector

So I don’t know how this is supposed to help anyone. I guess that back in the day before we all sat in front of screens and drooled we actually used to run around outside. Yeah crazy idea. It must have been boring though because pulling fire alarms was the funnest thing they could do. So the Fire Box Prank detector was created. You pull this fire alarm and a lock slide over your wrist and keep you there until the Fire Dept. can unlock you. But wait say it is a real emergency. Well then society thanks you for doing your part and will hold a moment of silence to honer your death before they get back to debating witchcraft science being taught in schools.

6. Pedestrian Collision Detection

Wow so if you really need a piece of software to tell you that you have hit a pedestrian then please stop driving. If you hit something when your driving don’t you get out to look and see what it was. Who keeps driving like nothing happened. If this is sounds like you would you even stop when the system said you hit a person or would you just go wow I thought it would feel different to run over someone.

7. Baby Window Cage

Yup the baby window cage. Once again we see how different we have become as a society from years past. I think Micheal Jackson ( is it too soon. Woops too late I’m already writing it ) was the only person that tried to order one of these. You know Micheal was Peter Pan and his kids were the lost boys and they would love to hang out a window to remember when they used to be able to fly around. Who would trust this thing with their kids. If you do know someone that would don’t tell me about it tell CPS.

These last inventions come to you from a show that aired called American Inventor. This show was ran like American Idol. You had a panel of judges and they would travel around the country and have people show off their inventions. These are the best of the worst.

7. Reinventing The Wheel

This guys is certifiably crazy. I was ready for this guy to start killing the judges. At least his invention has a subliminal safety feature built into it.

8. Bullet Ball

This guy created a new game that he thinks is so good they will have it in the Olympics. When you play Bullet Ball you look like two bums trying to scare flies away. This game was most likely created after him and his wife did a Speed Ball. Don’t let this guys sappy speech fool you into thinking he sold all that stuff for Speed I mean Bullet Ball.

9. Pet Petter

Its a busy world out there isn’t it, and it keeps getting busier. Wow I’m sold. The Pet Petter sounds like a device I invented called the Auto-spinner but enough about my inventions. This thing looks like it would kill a pet instead of sooth it. Aww such a good boy! num num num num num. Scary!

Well that wasn’t so bad. Not as good as the one you missed but good enough. Check back next week for some possible download goodies. Until next weeks Geek, I’m Street Fece and I’m OUT!!

That being said I don’t think I can hold a candle to the How’s Your News team. Mainly because I think Bobby might rage out and hurt someone if you bring fire close to him. Anyways I’m a one man army of geek and they are a team effort. This show would always make me LMAO, ROFL, LOL, and any other acronym you want to throw in there.

How’s you news was a funny show that aired on MTV. The executive producers of the show were the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The show was only able to make it 6 episodes before all production ceased. These six episodes that were made were great. While some might take offense on the use of disabled peoples as the shows hosts and to you I say chill out. I’m sure if you ask these guys about their time on this show they would tell you that they were all having a great time. Check out some of the youTube videos below.

Hello again an welcome to the first Geek Of The Week in 2010. This week its all about Avatar and alien plants.

So I’m at the theaters watching avatar again, this time in IMAX, and I’m just geeking out on all that is Avatar. What really stands for me in this film are the Environments. The forest created by Weta is just amazing. It has so much life. When I say life I mean it feels as thought there are little things packed in every nook and cranny like a real deal Rain forest here on earth. While the animals were very well done I was really enjoying the plants. The plants in this film remind me a lot of the what you would find in the ocean. It seems that in this world the plants and animal life found underwater are above ground.

Giant Tube worms Found at the bottom of the ocean

The image above reminds me of this scene in the movie where Jake Sully is walking in the forest and he sees giant flesh colored plants of different sizes packed in this area. When he touches one of the plants or animal it retreats back into a little tube like structure. As one goes they all start retreating like a domino effect. The other cool thing about this forest that reminded me of the ocean was all the bioluminescent plants and animals there were.

glowing coral

So this got me thinking of what kind of weird strange plant life do we have here on earth that many people have probably never seen. I was not surprised that we do have some very strange plants the seem almost alien in their design lifestyle. These plants do not follow the typical stereotypes of what you normally think of when it comes to plants.

mmm…breathe deep

Rafflesia:

Rafflesia is a parasitic plant that is found in the Indonesian rain forest. The plant is strange in that it has no leaves, stem, or true roots. Scientists say true roots because it does have something like a root that burros into a vine. This is how the plant gets its nutrients. Don’t ask me why this thing is not called a root but for some reason the botanists feel that it is not. The only part of the plant that is visible are the huge flower petals. This lovely flower is giant. What do I mean by giant. Well it can reach sizes of almost 4 feet in diameter and way up to 22lbs. A flower this size should smell pretty good, NOT. This thing smells of rotting flesh that drives the insects crazy and they just have to have it. Some animals like to eat fruit of this flower as well. Yum!

If I fart here no one will know its me.

Titan Arum:

While reading about Rafflesia I found out about the Titan Arum or Corpse flower. The Titan Arum also goes by another name, Amorphophallus titanum. This name is Greek and basically translates into Penis Flower, or Penis Vagina flower. The Greeks don’t like to beat around the bush, pun intended. The Corpse Flower is found on the outskirts of the Sumatran rain forest in the open grassy areas. This plant of many names is pretty damn big too. They can measure 10 feet in circumference and have blooms that tower to 9 feet high. They can weigh in at 200lbs. Like the first giant flower this one also smells of rotting flesh.

no you touch it, no you touch it.

Welwitshia:

The Welwitshia plant pretty weird. This thing is found in the Namibian deserts. This think will grow only two leaves and has a stem that instead of growing taller just gets wider. Welwitshia is very good at living in the desert by being able to survive up to 5 years without any water. This plant also has a very long lifespan being able to live upward of a thousand years. The one nice thing about this plant it that it does not smell like rotting flesh and is apparently very tasty. Some of the locals call this plant the onion of the desert.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Codariocalyx motorius:

Lets just call this the Telegraph Plant unless its easier for you to say the above name. This Plant is really neat in that it dances, which is one of its other nicknames, Dancing grass. The Telegraph plant has the ability to move its leaves in order to best align them with the sun to achieve the best photosynthesis. While all plants move during the day to track the sun this one is unique in that the movement is quick enough to see with the naked eye and not with time lapse photography. When I watch the video I am just waiting for the plant to get up and walk away. You can find this plant in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Dracaena:

So your probably saying wow all this weird shit and now you post a tree? Well yes this looks like a semi regular tree that you would find in Africa. That is all fine and normal. So why is this tree so cool? Well this tree has another name, the Dragon Blood Tree. Is you interest getting piqued yet? Well the dragon blood tree got its name from the sap it secretes which is red like blood. That is why this ordinary looking tree is in this list.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Mimosa Pudica:

Mimosa pudica or the Shy plant is pretty neat. Like the Plans in avatar this thing will retreat its leaves if touched. That’s all I have to say about this plant. Watch the video.

do you think they took it out after they prolly threw it in there for the photo

Nepenthes Attenboroughii:

This plant does not have another nickname yet. The reason being is that it was only recently discovered in 2007 on an expedition in the Philippine Archipelago. These common looking pitcher plants are bigger than normal. They are so big that small rodents will meet their doom if they get to curious about the content inside the pitcher. Well what is inside that these rodents and insects want? This plant has a very sweet nectar inside that is very incising. If a rodent or insect decides to investigate they quickly realize that this is the last thing they will be doing. The inside of the pitcher plant is coated with a very slippery wax. These rodents and insects will tire and later drown inside the plant. Once this happens the acids and enzymes inside the plant break down its catch. The only thing to remain will be bones. I guess its just a matter of time before these things become people sized.

I know you know

Adansonia:

Adansonia or more commonly called the Baobab tree. These are found in Madagascar, Africa, and Australia. These trees always look like the aftermath of Giants trying to have sex with the earth but since the earth spins so fast well you get the idea. These trees are definitely funny looking but funny looking for a reason. This reason is because of their amazing ability to store water. The Baobab tree can store up to 300 liters of water inside. When it rains these things start drinking and swell up in size. They have a life span of about 500 years. Some trees are suspected of being over a thousand years old but no one is for sure since the trees do not make growth rings.

This is by far not the be all end all list of strange alien like plants here on earth. This is just a small list of some of the ones I found to be most interesting. While they may not all be as neat and pretty as Avatar’s plants there are still so many cool things out there in our own world. Until next week I’m Street Fece and I’m OUT!

Hello again and welcome to another Geek Of The Week. I hope you all had fun celebrating the Holidays, umm wait, I mean Christmas. I don’t want Mr. Wolf getting his panties in a bunch or a boot in my arse. Either way at this point I think it’s inevitable. Now that you have your gifts and they are all unwrapped and completely in your possession it is time to think about exchanging them. Yeah this week its all about the geeky gifts you wish you got for Christmas or maybe its what I wish I got for Christmas.

iSlate

OK who doesn’t want an apple product for Christmas. I mean they are so cool looking and they actually work. I think Apple are one of the few company’s that can actually do both. That being said there isn’t any product out now by apple that I want. What I wanted for Christmas was their new iTablet or iSlate. Its so new that no one even knows the actual name but iSlate may be the winner as someone found out that Apple just purchased that domain. The only thing I do know is that it was designed by Aliens and it floats. No but seriously this is a real device that should be announced on Jan 26 at a special media event. You know apple they are always hush hush but they always deliver the goods. Here are some completely fake fan mockups of the device.

Ticket to Space

Yes a ticket to space on the Virgin Galactic would be out of this world. This program has been in development for some time now. On Dec 7 of this month they revealed the new spaceship to the public. They even let the Governator hit the damn thing with a bottle. I personally don’t want to go to space on that one. This new spaceship is roomier than the first version and looks pretty nice too. Tickets cost $200,000 and deposits start from $20,000. For that price I can take a few friends along. Actually I’ll just continue to dream of space and just watch the wealthy have all the fun. For the full details go to their site here. Maybe they will have layaway.

Random Bag Of Crap

Ah I love woot. If you haven’t experienced woot then you are really missing out. Woot is just one of those cool sites on the internet that cater to the compulsory nature we all have in us. They will list one item for 24 hours at a really good price. You never know how many they have and once they are gone they are gone. At the end of the 24 hours a new item is posted. If the previous item didn’t sell out they will hold on to them for their Woot Off. The Woot Off is when all the past items that didn’t sell out are listed again. The same format of one item being listed is followed but this time when the item sells out a new one is posted instantly. This continues for an unspecified amount of time. At the end of this woot off their is the chance to get the Random Bag of Crap. These bags sell for $5 and they get snatched really fast. There have been bags in the past that were flat panel monitors but it could also very likely be some cheap umbrella. You never know.

Tauntaun Sleeping Bag

In the sub-zero wasteland of the planet Hoth, only the strong survive… and of course those lucky Jedi protected by the thick skin of a Tauntaun. Oh yes the Tauntaun Sleeping Bag. You know the inner Geek inside you wants one of these things. They even come with a lightsaber laser zipper so you can reenact the scene from attack of the clones. This is from the brilliant minds over at Think Geek the place to go for all your geek needs.

Gold Devices

I will admit that these really don’t interest me in the slightest but I know that some of yous however might be getting all giddy for some blingtastic tech device. Well your wait is over. The guys over at Goldstriker Internati0nal are the leaders when it comes to blinging out the latest tech gadget. They have an iphone, wii, and PS3. I guess they don’t like to play games with friends cause everyone knows you need an xbox for that. Ooohh… yeah thats right I said it, Xbox. Here are some pics of these devices. For full specs on these things go to their website. Quick note about their website. While these guys have some of the most expensive tech devices their website is one of those horrible flash sites. You know the ones that have all these crazy sparkles and goofy intro.

Optimus Tactus Keyboard

Wow am I really finishing this list with a freakin keyboard. Well my friends yes, yes I am. This is not just any keyboard this is the Optimus Tactus. They are designed by Art Lebedeve Studio and these keyboards are cool. The first version of this keyboard is for sale already at a pretty steep price point of $2000 U.S. dollars. Who cares about that one. I want the Tactus. The Tactus is still just a concept and no functional prototypes have been shown. The idea of having a fully customizable keyboard sounds pretty neat to me. Look at the the first picture below and imagine running photoshop because that’s what it’s showing you. While this wouldn’t really help me at this point since I am a power user. Yeah thats right I said it, Cmd + Opt + Shift + E. Don’t worry my nerd powers were only set to stun. The cool potential comes from all the other programs that can modify the keyboard layout for you. Video games is the first thing that comes to mind. Having icons for all your inventory items. Or say you want to run Avid or Protools this would be pretty cool since they make specific keyboards for them already but they are ugly and you cant change them.

I could go on and on. There are so many cool things out their that would be fun to have. I told myself I would limit it to 5 but gave you 6 anyways. Once again I hope you all had a great Christmas. I’m Street Fece and I will see you next year.

Well hello again everybody and welcome to another Geek O Da Week. This week it is more great youtube videos. These videos, if you don’t like to read the title of blogs before you read them, are about the old GI Joe cartoons. These are not the whole cartoons they are what came at the end of a cartoon episode. Basically the creators of the cartoon series thought it would be a good idea to leave the children with a good message. These messages varied from your typical don’t do drugs or eat yellow snow. They also had more unique messages, I guess for the unlucky children that couldn’t live in San Diego, that warned of the dangers of frozen lakes having thin ice.

WOW don’t do drugs I’m LMAO already right. No what is funny about these PSA’s is that someone went and remade them using their own voice over completely changing the message and making an instant youtube hit. Well I was going to leave it at that and post the videos but figured why not find out who the mastermind was behind these videos.

Eric Fensler and his company Fensler Films were the ones behind these funny videos. Fensler not only recut and changed the audio of the PSA’s he also added some animation to them as well. All of these videos were once hosted on the company website. I say once because like most parody’s of old things from our childhoods, like Bill Cosby, a cease and desist letter came from Hasbro, the owners of GI Joe. So all the videos had to be taken down. Thankfully we have youtube and the crazy people that make it so no matter what anyone tries to do the video will always get reposted for our viewing pleasure.

So if you need a good laugh then check these videos out. I am off to go see what the writer of Mythoi is up to at his birthday relaxer. I guess his life is always a party and so for his birthdays he relaxes. Until next week I’m Street Fece and I’m out! PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!!!

Hello again and welcome back to Semantink. It’s people like you that are helping spread the word and we appreciate it, but seriously You Suck At Photoshop. Some of you are probably saying wait I’m pretty good with the clone brush. Well I ask you to not take any personal offence from You Suck At Photoshop. Some of you may already know what I’m talking about and some may have just agreed but You Suck At Photoshop is a great youtube series about photoshop and has nothing to do with your skill.

Troy Hitch, left, and Matt Bledsoe

This series began running in December of 2007 on MyDamnChannel.com. From their very first episode they have garnered a very strong following. An example of this success is in the number of views this first episode has recieved. Episode 1 has had over 2.1 million views. Not to shabby. The series was created by Matt Bledsoe and Troy Hitch of the Big Fat Institute for Advanced Interactive Design. The episodes are about a fictional character named Donnie Hoyle. Donnie takes you through the tutorials while talking about his tragic and funny life. The cool thing about these episodes is that real information is given out that can be used.

I love these videos they crack me up. I’m going to start you off with one of my favorites. This is episode 3 and it teaches you clone stamping if your trying to learn but more importantly it is hilarious. It’s been a very long time since I have watched this episode and I still remember deceitful meat sticks. If you like these then I encourage you to check out the rest of their videos.
