Hello and welcome to another Geek O da week. Today its all about a FaerieCon. I have just recently found out about this event that has been going on for years now. I was reading a blog somewheres on the Internet and there was a link for FaerieCon. I was like what the hell is FaerieCon? Well I found out and I will share this info with you.

This is taken strait from their site: “Faericon brings magic of Faerieworlds, the West Coast’s premiere mythic music festival, to the East Coast. Array yourself in your most beautiful faerie finery, don your wings, gather your friends and family and cross the threshold! Once inside, you will find the largest gathering of faerie artists and authors in the world who look forward to meeting you, amazing, magical apparel, beautiful jewelry, mysterious masks, handmade crafts, fashion shows, performers, musicians, storytellers, exhibitions, panel and workshops.”

You had me at Faericon but I will stay to see my friends and family cross the threshold. Right? I mean come on who wouldn’t want to don their wings and release their inner faerie that shines in all of us. So Faericon started because they wanted to bring the magic of Faerworlds to the east coast. I was like what there is another con that spawned this con and then I saw the videos for Faerieworld.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The event looks crazy with Ents and giant Centaurs walking around. Maybe this is what hippies have transformed into. From the looks of it there seems to be a pretty decent amount of people that participate in this thing. They have live bands and other performances. There is a full vendor section so you can swap incantations and buy the latest in Faerie gear. They also have the typical Con costume contest. I think I have seen most of the same people appearing at the SD Comic Con.

All in all it looks pretty interesting and I am pretty sure that if I was in the area I would definitely go and check it out. It looks like a people watchers paradise. The whole thing probably smells of patchouli and sage, which unlike most people, am completely fine with. If you need more info check out their sites: Faeriecon.com and Faerieworlds.com. You will find a lot more info, photos, videos, and Faerie products that should satiate your interests. Until next time, Street Fece out!

Cosplay, for those of you who don’t know, is “short for “costume play”, a type of performance art whose participants outfit themselves, with often-elaborate costumes and accessories, as a specific character. Characters are usually sourced in various media, including manga, anime, tokusatsu, comic books, graphic novels, video games, and fantasy movies.” Now when it comes to a beautiful young woman dressing up as a character I’ve grown to love, I’m all for it. I’m even okay with a gym-mongrel who has spent the better part of his life working out in order to mask himself as his favorite character from whatever realm he chooses. What I am not cool with, is an unattractive person dressing up in anything aside from sweatpants or a tarp, and going out in public screaming for attention, especially in an area where we, the innocent masses, can’t help but see them. This should help clear things up:

I hope you can understand now. Do you see what not-so-offensive-fat-sailor-moon man can lead us to?! Sure, we laugh and chuckle at the obvious irony, but there are those who don’t! There are humans among us who leave their homes thinking abominable arrangements of cloth that vaguely represent their heroes in color and placement upon the body is enough! It is not enough! Cosplay is NOT for everyone! It is a commitment to the character involving training and shapeliness where appropriate! You don’t get to wake up one day and say, “Gee, I think today I’m Wonder Woman!” NO! She’s an AMAZONIAN GODDESS YOU FOOL! Are YOU in shape like an AMAZOINAN GODDESS?! I DIDN’T THINK SO!!

As I write this, my heart is racing and I feel an urgency at the tips of my fingers as if somewhere, an overweight, under-sunned, gap-toothed, overly-hairy, cankled beast dressed as Super Girl has just killed a child by merely making itself visible. Damn you poorly-costumed villain. Damn you to Cosplay Hell…

I’m sorry.

Fear not my friends. All is not lost. There are those among us who stay true to character and refuse to compromise the improbable figures of ficticious characters. Villainess or superhero, these players represent what is good for all of us — and now that you’ve tasted the bitter, you may sip of the sweet:

Do you still like vampires after seeing that video? If you say “no,” I don’t blame you. Chan-Wook Park has crafted what some call “the non-vampire,” vampire film. A horror movie for everyone who is sick of these teeny bopper vampires, and a movie that tends to break a lot of the societal norms for vampires in general. “Thirst” will be released in the United States on July 31st, 2009, starting off its U.S. screenings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. (Eventually gaining a wider release to all cities across the U.S.)

This “NSFW” poster was banned in Korea because of their respect for clergy.

All of Chan-Wook’s films seem to push the viewer to the edge. The edge of insanity, I should say. His story telling and natural dialogue and humor in his films make them a treat to experience (I attribute that to his advantage of being able write the screenplays on most of his films.) If you aren’t familiar with Chan-Wook Park, then you might know him from Old Boy. Old Boy was a great, albeit disturbing film, loosely based on a Japanese Manga of the same name. The rest of the “Vengeance Trilogy” is just as good (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance) and I recommend seeing all of them if you are going to attempt any of them at all.

On a side note, “Thirst” stars Kang-Ho Song, who was fantastic in The Host (another Korean Horror Film.)

“Thirst,” is great in many ways. First of all, look at the irony of the priest (a person who normally is fighting mosters) as the main protagonist and antagonist. How crazy is that? When Chan-Wook Park was being interviewed (a video I will hopefully be able to include in an update to this post) at Comic Con, he talked about how he didn’t want to do another vampire film to just do another vampire film. Hollywood has already seen it’s fare share of the good (Interview With The Vampire, Let The Right One In) and the bad (BloodRayne, Once Bitten) in the realm of bloodsuckers. The reason Chan-Wook said he picked to do a vampire film is simply because it fit the story line he was writing. He wanted to make a movie about a priest who was in the middle of deep suffering. A priest who had some sort of ailment that fueled his internal struggle. Vampirism was a perfect fit. In the priests’ attempt at helping someone who is “diseased,” he receives a blood tranfusion. The vampirism is treated like a disease. Crosses don’t do anything, a priest obviously has no affect on the curse, and strangest of all, no fangs are involved. It’s ideas like these that get me excited for this fresh, bloody take on vampires…
